Not quite what I'd expected

Unfortunately I did not find this book as helpful as I hoped , as its actual aim is not to control your temptation to drink too much but to stop you drinking completely. If you are such a heavy drinker that you battle with craving alcohol every waking hour, then this may be the answer, but if you only wish to break a habit of drinking slightly too much on some of the occasions when you do drink, then I believe that good old fashioned will power, which Carr denigrates frequently, is the answer. Carr also scorns AA's tried & proven methodology, which given its success rate and the extent of its support network is unhelpful for true alcoholics.

I also believe he is mistaken when he believes that we all force ourselves to drink even though we (at least start off) hating the taste & have to acquire it by heavy dedication to drinking anything & everything. I for one have never drunk anything I don't like the taste of and for this reason never drink beer or spirits (or for that matter tea or coffee), only wine. I'm sure my palate has been refined over the years and my taste buds have developed so that I prefer more sophisticated flavours now, but I loved wine (especially red) from the first time I tasted it and continue to do so till this day. Thousands of wine connoisseurs cannot all hate their job!
