6 Jun 2006Reviewer: Mark I do have what I believe is a healthy disregard for the self-help genre in general - there must be a few of the genuine article out there but often they confuse with their conflicting messages and glib approach. Ultimately, most will let you down and lose you money. `Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol' was, for me, a remarkable exception to the rule. For this well-groomed sceptic, the book turned out to be particularly intuitive and, most importantly, amazingly effective.
For 16 years, I consistently drank more and more. Trying circumstances which, by the way, remain largely in tact led me to several bouts of severe depression, two redundancies, major financial difficulties and long-term loneliness. Alcohol became the expensive crutch upon which I relied to blight the pain of my life on a daily basis. At the time of writing, I remain vulnerable to these negative influences. However, my debilitating addiction to alcohol is now cured and was so quite literally overnight.
I read Allen Carr's publication over a period of a fortnight and drank throughout - as the author advised. Then, on the evening I completed the book, I took what was to be my last alcoholic drink. The following day, I went to the pub as usual and drank diet Coke all evening - I simply did not have the appetite for alcohol at all and have no desire to drink it again.
If you have a problem with alcohol (or even if you just think you do), by all means try every avenue of professional help open to you that you may wish or are recommended to undertake. It may be irresponsible not to. However, for the price of a paperback, I would recommend this work wholeheartedly in the hope that my review, and consequently Allen Carr's book, will help many more of those who need it.
If you happen upon this review, Mr Carr - thank you for your outstanding contribution to the field of control over addiction and to my own well-being. My only regret is that I didn't discover you earlier.
